The difference between butt-welded flange and flat-welded flange is that there is a long and inclined high neck from the flange to the pipe weld to the flange disc. The wall thickness of this high neck gradually transits to the pipe wall thickness along the height direction, which improves the stress discontinuity and thus increases the strength of the flange. Butt-welded flanges are mainly used in severe service conditions, such as those where the stress at the flange is high due to thermal expansion of pipes or other loads or where the stress changes repeatedly. Piping with large fluctuation of pressure and temperature or piping with high temperature, high pressure and low temperature below zero. It is generally used for connecting pipes and valves with PN greater than 2.5MPa. It is also used in pipelines that deliver expensive, flammable and explosive media.
Applications
